Best pH for Bottled Water

Ever wondered why pH is important in water? Or what pH even means? You’re not alone.

It can be tricky to determine what pH is good for you—and what constitutes pH in the first place. Read on to find out everything you need to know about water pH levels.

What Does It Mean To Measure Water’s pH?

Let’s start with the basics. According to the U.S. Department of the Interior, pH measures free hydrogen and hydroxyl ions in liquids or water. Water with more hydrogen ions is more acidic. Water with more hydroxyl ions is basic.

How Does the pH Scale Work?

When someone measures water pH, they determine pH levels from acidic to neutral to basic. This is where the pH scale comes in. A pH scale ranges from 0-14. Liquids falling in the 0-6 range are considered acidic, while liquids 7-14 are considered basic—also known as alkaline.

Some examples of acidic liquids are lemon juice and tomato juice. Basic liquids can include oven cleaners and drain cleaners. Water can be basic, acidic, or neutral, depending on different factors.

Why Do Different Water Types Have Different pH Levels?

So—what factors determine water pH levels? Everything from minerals to filtering processes does. This is why different water types can have different pH levels.

Tap - 5-7 pH

Tap water can vary. This is partly due to the system that it goes through before getting to people’s homes. Copper pipes, sediment levels, and different regional minerals can affect tap water’s pH.

Distilled - 7 pH

Distilled water should have a neutral pH of 7. Thanks to its unique distillation process, most minerals and impurities are removed from the water before being packaged for the public. Fewer minerals and impurities mean a more neutral pH.

Alkaline - 8-9 pH

Alkaline water is a little above “neutral” on the pH scale. It tends to have a higher mineral content than other waters, giving it a higher pH. Alkaline water can occur naturally (think river water flowing over rocks with minerals) or through specific processes (like ionization or electrolysis).

Spring - 6.5-8

Like alkaline water, spring water’s pH is affected by its higher mineral content. And similar to tap water, the region where the spring water is from also determines pH.

Why pH Balance Is Important

The water you drink can directly affect your health. If water is too acidic or too basic, it’s harmful.

Not sure where to start? Opt for water that falls within the 7-9 pH range. Water that is a little more basic (or alkaline) often contains minerals like sodium, calcium, and iron—all essential to our body’s functions.

Why 8.8 pH Is Optimal for Alkaline Water

A pH level of 8.8 is the sweet spot for alkaline water. It contains just enough minerals to be considered beneficial and alkaline, without becoming too basic.
